How do fictional scenarios influence the way we perceive
and
produce urban realities?
Kopatzkis reimagines the reality of an empty apartment in Berlin Hellersdorf, a housing area developed during the GDR. Originally conceived as a modern vision for communal urban living, the area—now marked by outdated infrastructure, social stigma, and questions of neglect—embodies the complexities of post-socialist urban spaces.
Blending fiction with spatial observation, the short film explores the potential futures of these Plattenbau structures. By treating the buildings not just as passive backdrops, but as active agents within the city, Kopatzkis opens up a dialogue about memory, architecture, and belonging. How can a precise understanding of this neighborhood’s history inspire future interventions in its architecture? And what does it mean to live together in a city shaped by both utopian ideals and unresolved pasts?
