As part of Studio Spaces of Solidarity’s contribution to the Tbilisi Architecture Biennial 2020, the concept of solidarity — and its diverse spatial manifestations— became the central theme of Studio SOS’s investigation. In a time defined by isolation and physical distancing, practices rooted in collaboration, dialogue, and exchange were put to the test.

Solidarity reveals itself through a range of human values, behaviors, protocols, and negotiations—often without a shared foundation. To build a common ground and foster a critical understanding, the studio developed three tools to engage with this semester’s typology: “niches” between parkinglots along Wilhelmshavener Straße, 10551 Berlin.
The short movie Livingroomless city imagines a future of Berlin. How are our struggles embodied on a spatial basis and in what sense can uncertain times change our understanding of solidarity. The movie introduces a non-technological future: Due to Berlins increase in density, public spaces no longer function as a background of the city but become an active part of our everyday-life. The future being shown is not wireless. Cables are re-presenting undefined boundaries between domestic and public space and the complex dynamics of a dense city, its interdependencies and connections.
